About DPF's

So what is a diesel particulate filter? (DPF)

Since 2009, manufacturers of diesel cars have been legally required to fit all diesel cars with a DPF.

A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a filter that captures and stores harmful exhaust soot particles in order to reduce emissions from diesel vehicles.

Why am I having problems with my DPF?

In normal use, a DPF regenerates itself by reaching a sufficient temperature to burn off the excess soot particles. Each vehicle will have a different regeneration cycle. Usually, it requires driving the vehicle at higher speeds for a short period of time in order to produce enough heat for the regeneration cycle to be successful.

So if the vehicle is being used solely for short journeys or as a result of certain driving conditions, for example you only drive at low speeds, the regeneration cycle may not complete and as a result the Diesel Particulate Filter will become blocked.

What should I look out for?

> Loss of engine power (limp mode).

> The DPF and or engine management light will appear on your dashboard.

> Automatic Stop-Start System Not Working.

> Black smoke coming from the exhaust.

> A noticeable increase in fuel consumption.

What happens if I ignore the problem?

A blocked DPF will upset the balance of your engine by preventing the normal venting of soot particles, which causes a variety of issues. One of which will require a costly replacement DPF and eventually resulting in engine failure.

The cost of a diesel particulate filter replacement can vary greatly depending on the vehicle manufacturer, size of the engine etc. However the average cost of a DPF replacement ranges from £1,000- £3,000.
